Vacationing somewhere new has surprising mental benefits
Vacationing somewhere new has surprising mental benefitsVacationing somewhere new has surprising mental benefitsDo you vacation in the same quaint town in Maine every year? Love that Florida timeshare? Try going someplace different next year, suggests psychologist Todd B. Kashdan in the Harvard Business Review. There are significant mental benefits to changing the scenery, he writes, especially considering far too many business and personal trips are designed to maximize comfort and minimize uncertainty.Kashdans insights about exploring which he says leads to greater emotional agility, increased empathy, and creativity were sparked by a trip to Sri Lanka and Thailand, but theyre also all backed up by research.Heres what can happen when you trade your yearly ski trip for Fiesole.Emotional agilityhis refers to the ability not to react immediately, but instead observe your thoughts and rationally plan the best course of action. By spending time in unfamiliar towns, cities, or countries , you become tolerant and even accepting of your own discomfort and more confident in your ability to navigate ambiguous situations, Kashdan writes.Increased empathyIn a study of 485 Americans cited by the article, those who had traveled to other countries demonstrated a greater ability to hold off on judging a person until theyd learned more information about them beyond basic surface data like age, gender, or race.CreativitySeveral studies confirmed that international travel leads to higher creativity. Researchers in Singapore found that unusual problem solving was linked to exposure to other cultures and not just travel. Studying languages, eating food and listening to music from other countries, and having international buddies also counted. You dont have to go to Thailand to experience the growth of inhabiting a new place for a while either, writes Kashdan. Different cities and towns also count as long as its a new place where the people there arent just like you.The locale ne ed only to be exotic to yourself. The place outside your comfort zone may be much closer than you think.

6 lessons to learn from negative feedback on your blog
6 lessons to learn from negative feedback on your blog6 lessons to learn from negative feedback on your blogDont let a couple of negative comments bring you down. Use unterstellung tips to deal with the internet trolls.A little blood, sweat, and tears go into each article you write whether its for your job, as a guest contributor, or for a personal blog. So its easy to take it personally when these pieces you worked so hard on get overrun with comments by people critiquing your two cents, the way you delivered it, and even who you are as a person. At first, the influx of criticism may make you feel helpless, but dont be discouraged - any feedback, even hateful comments, is a sign that your article intrigued readers and perhaps even ruffled a few feathers, which is every writers goal. So the next time this happens to you, take a deep breath, and remember these six tips to help you cope with criticism on your beloved blog.Fight the urge to fight backIts no secret that people are mora comfortable being outspoken when their identity is hidden behind their computer screen. I can guarantee that almost every person who leaves a rude comment on your blog post would never dream of saying something so nasty to your face, despite the mistakes you may or may leid have made in your article.Whatever you do, it is crucial that you do elend respond to rude, superficial comments only written to dishearten you. If readers comment with relevant questions about your article, feel free to answer them, but never address an insult. If more than one reader asks (politely) about a point you perhaps didnt explain clearly enough, feel free to clear up any misconceptions that might change the content or purpose of your article.Know that you might see more hate than loveThe people who feel most compelled to comment are usually the ones who didnt appreciate your work. The ones who enjoyed it probably dont feel the urge to share their thoughts. Unfortunately, your dissatisfied customers are the most outspoken its a fact of life. But you were confident enough in your piece to put your name on it and publish it. You know its good, most of your readers know its good, but you unfortunately might miss out on some much-needed compliments.Try not to focus on the negativity - I promise that for every reader who bashes your post, there are multiple people who loved it but didnt share their opinion with you. A very wise career coach once told me that in a popular blog, negative comments are virtually inevitable - if people put in the effort to be mean to you or rationalize why you messed up, youve made it.Dont delete it just because it bothers youIf you wish to delete comments written by others, thats up to you. Youre definitely free to delete anything slanderous or not pertaining to the articles subject, but if you delete every criticism, youre discouraging all feedback (even helpful feedback). It may be tempting to say goodbye to that slightly condescending, nit-picky paragr aph forever, but how else will you learn from your mistakes ?Consider that they might be rightEhhh sorry Charlie, but your readers might have a point. While you shouldnt obsess over rude responses, try not to totally tune out criticism - most people dont have the creativity or wont put in the effort to make something up completely out of thin air. Its likely that if multiple people mention the same flaw in your article, you probably didnt present the point you were trying to make properly.Dont be intimidated by your mistake. Just correct yourself by responding to those who respectfully inquired about the mix-up or inaccuracy. Be sure you thank them for their interest in your work.Dont dwell on the negativesIn addition to attacking your writing, some people will personally attack you using any information provided - including your photo or byline. These people are exceptionally cruel, and deserve an eternal bad hair day for being so rude to you when you were just trying to help or entertain them.Try not to let these people leiter you. Remember that some people are practically pros at spamming blog posts with derogatory content. Its possible to find a reason to bring down anyone - and some are experts at detecting a weakness just by looking at a headshot or reading a short author bio. Please dont be deterred by such unoriginal, hastily-crafted put-downs.Never stop writingAt the risk of sounding cheesy, dont let a few rain clouds block your sunshine. Most likely, youll have some good Samaritans come to your rescue and defend your writing honor in the comments - those are the readers you know youve really influenced Thats difficult to do, so take immense pride when this happens. It proves that, just how you liked what you wrote and thought it contained valuable information, others agree with you.One last thing, bloggersAs a final note, keep in mind that most things boil down to a matter of opinion A topic youre interested in, a song you love, another article y ou think is brilliant - someone else will detest all those things. If readers comment with conflicting opinions on your topic in an appropriate manner, pat yourself on the back Debate on your post is a sign that its thought-provoking and worth discussing further. Just make sure youre not responding to readers who posted a comment with foul language or mentioned anything about you (not just your content or fantastic writing style).Remember that the people writing negative comments are not your enemies, but internet surfers who might be bored, in a bad mood or just unpleasant people in general. If people are commenting, theyre reading. Do you know what would be way, way worse? If no one read what you wrote. So start brainstorming your next idea, and give everyone even more to talk about

YOU DONT NEED A COLLEGE DEGREE TO QUALIFY FOR AN ADMINISTRATIVE JOB
YOU DONT NEED A COLLEGE DEGREE TO QUALIFY FOR AN ADMINISTRATIVE JOBYOU DONT NEED A COLLEGE DEGREE TO QUALIFY FOR AN ADMINISTRATIVE JOBYOU DONT NEED A COLLEGE DEGREE TO QUALIFY FOR AN ADMINISTRATIVE JOBTestimonialGreat resource Got 9 out of 12 referrals using your guideThank you. THE CHALLENGEOur client, a GS-7 for several years, was interested in applying for a federal government position as a GS-0301-09. Group 0300 is reserved for Administrative Management series positions. She contacted The Resume Place because the language in the Qualifications portion of the Announcement confused her. zu sich concern was that she didnt have a degree. The opening sentence of the Qualifications section statedIn bestellung to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application (emphasis added). The section continued with the following statement regarding alternative experience and educationSpecialized Experience (the following language appeared after a specific list of specialized experience) work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal serviceOREducation Substitution Have aMastersdegreeor2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degreeorCompletion of all requirements for an LL.B or J.D. degree from an accredited college or university.ORCombination of Education and ExperienceHave some specialized experience as described inabove, but less than 1 year and have less than 2 years of graduate-level education as describedabove. The computedpercentage of the requirements is at least 100%.The same principles that we discuss below apply to positions in Group 0300 regardless of whether the education substitute refers to graduate or undergraduate education alternatives.THERE IS NO EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GROUP 0300 POSITIONSThe Office of Per sonnel Managements (OPM) qualification standards for Group 0300 positions permit qualification on the grund of education/training, or experience, or a combination of the two. Many applicants for these positions are unaware that their experience may convert in whole or in part for education.Although OPM has determined that certain positions can have prescribed minimum education requirements (positive education requirement), this does not apply to positions in Group 0300 but rather to positions in the scientific, technical or professional occupation fields. For all other positions, OPM is statutorily prohibited from prescribing a minimum education level. It must provide for the complete or partial substitution of specialized experience. See 5 U.S.C. 3308. So, if you are applying for a position in the Administrative Management Group (0300 series positions), you dont need to have a degree in order to meet the minimum qualifications and make the best qualified list of applicants referred to the selecting official. You can meet the minimum qualifications based solely on having the requisite amount of specialized experience, or by combining experience and education. In this case, our client qualified based on her 1 year (52 weeks or more) of specialized experience as a GS-7 (next lowest grade level). For candidates who are not in federal positions, you will need to establish that your private sector specialized experience is equivalent to the next lowest grade level in the federal sector. The key is whether you have the required Specialized Experience experience that has equips you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position.Be careful when reading the Qualificationssection of the Job Announcement. In this case, there were alternative qualification statements education and/or experience.Occupational Group 0300Group 0300 includes many general administrat ive, clerical, and office services positions. Employee Performance Improvement Strategies
Employee Performance Improvement StrategiesEmployee Performance Improvement StrategiesDo you have the responsibility for supervising the work of others? If so, you know that employees dont always do what you want them to do. On the one hand, they act as if they are competent professionals. On the other, they procrastinate, miss deadlines, and wait for instructions. They blame others when their work is unsuccessful. And worst of all, employees become defensive when you try to coach them to successful performance improvement through excellent, goal-accomplishing work. So, whats a supervisor to do? Performance improvement is your answer. You must begin by finding out exactly why the employee is not meeting your expectations. Perhaps the employee is unclear about what you want him to do. He may lack the time, tools, talent, training, or temperament required to effectively perform the job. He may disagree with your requirements or expectations. Regardless, you wont have a performing, enga ged employee until you identify what is wrong with the employees functioning. Diagnosing Performance Improvement Opportunities and Problems When an employee is failing at work, I ask the W. Edwards Deming question, What about the work system is causing the rolle to fail? Most frequently, if the employee knows what they are supposed to do, I find the answer is time, tools, training, temperament or talent. Performance Improvement Questions These are the key questions that you and the employee will want to answer to diagnose performance problems that result in the need for you to seek performance improvement. This checklist for employee performance improvement will help diagnose the performance issue. What about the work system is causing the person to fail?Does the employee know exactly what you want him to do? Does he know the goals and the outcomes expected? Does he share the picture you have for the end result?Does the employee have confidence in her competence to perform t he tasks associated with the goal? In my experience, procrastination is often the result of an employee lacking confidence in her ability to produce the required outcome. Or procrastination can result from the employee being overwhelmed with the magnitude of the task. Is the employee practicing effective work management? As an example, does he break large tasks into small chunks of doable actions? Does he have a method for tracking project progress and to do lists?Have you established a critical path for the employees work? This is the identification of the major milestones in a project at which youd like feedback from the employee. Do you keep your commitment to attend the meetings at which this feedback is provided?Does the employee have the appropriate and needed people working with him or the team to accomplish the project? Are other members of the team keeping their commitments and if not, is there something the employee can do to help them? Does the employee understand how her work fits into the larger scheme of things in the company? Does she appreciate the value her work is adding to the companys success? Is the employee clear about what constitutes success in your company? Perhaps he thinks that what he is contributing is good work and that you are a picky, overly-managing supervisor.Does the employee feel valued and recognized for the work she is contributing? Does she feel fairly compensated for her contribution? Understanding behauptung issues in performance improvement enables a manager to help an employee succeed. When you follow these steps and answer these questions in a performance improvement model, the employee can be helped to succeed.

Steps to Becoming a USDA Organic Certifying Agent
Steps to Becoming a USDA Organic Certifying Agent Steps to Becoming a USDA Organic Certifying Agent Becoming an organic certifying agent is a worthwhile choice if youre looking for an interesting and useful organic career. Before you start on the path to becoming an agent, you should look into what it is organic certifying agents do and decide if you have the skills needed to become an agent and consider if its the right sort of job for you. The National Organic Program (NOP) accredits certifying agents under the authority of the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990, and once you decide that youd like to become an organic certifying agent, the process is fairly straightforward. Note too that you may apply regardless of how many certifications are issued by you. Eligibility also is not dependent upon membership in any association. To become a NOP-accredited certifying agent, you must first complete and submit two forms to the USDA. The total application package must be submitted in English. Youll need to submit one hard copy and one identical electronic copy. Application forms include a USDA Grading and Verification Division Form (PDF) and a USDA National Organic Program Form. Your application will include basic information such as your business name, primary office location, mailing address, and contact numbers, along with information about any chapters or subsidiary offices. Youll also need to cover your area of operation, the estimated number of each type of operation you expect to certify annually and a list of each state in which you currently certify operations. If applicable, your application should also list any foreign country you certify in. The second step is a waiting game. After you submit your application, The Accreditation and International Activities (AIA) Division (AIA Division) processes your application, performing a basic cursory review that will make sure all the required documents were submitted and to make sure you arent affected by any travel restrictions. Travel restrictions are in place to keep everyone safe and NOP accreditation cannot be issued to any certifying agents that, Are based in or conduct key activities in areas where the U.S. State Department has issued travel warnings, travel alerts, or other restrictions that could affect the health, safety, or security of Federal employees. If your application is accepted, its submitted to the Audit, Review, and Compliance Branch (ARC Branch) and a documentation adequacy review (desk review) will be conducted. The Desk Review The desk reviews are meant to evaluate compliance on the part of the applicant before an onsite assessment is granted. If the desk review finds a problem, youll have a chance to correct it within a given time frame. After a successful desk review, a report is handed over to the AIA Division within 90 days from the receipt of the application package. Then the AIA Division reviews the report, and if everything looks good, theyll schedule an assessment. The Onsite Assessment The onsite assessment ( § 205.508) is used to further verify that a potential certifying agent is not only organic competent but well-prepared to be a working agent. It means the potential agent should have a well-designed and reliable quality system in place, complete with records. The assessment team will look at the work site, key activities, and certification files. Reviews will take longer if you hold more certification files (see part 22 of General Accreditation Policies and Procedures). The Final Decision Final accreditation decisions are made by the AMS Administrator and are based on, A review of the information submitted in accordance with § 205.506(a)(3), the assessment report, the Accreditation Committeeâs recommendations, and any other relevant supporting documentation. Once certified, your accreditation is good for five years, and another on-site assessment is required at the two and half year mark. Fee Information You should be aware that when you apply, a $500 deposit is due when you submit your application. The fee is applied to agent assessment costs. Beyond the $500 deposit owed at the time of application submission, there are other fees involved with becoming an agent. GVD charges $108 per hour for an on-site assessment, travel to the site, and the writing of the audit report. Hotel, meals, and incidentals, travel expenses, and other miscellaneous costs may also be applicable. According to NOP, the average cost for the documentation adequacy review in 2010 was $4,428. You can find all the updated fee information in § 205.640 and § 205.641 and § 300 and § 301 of 7 CFR Part 62. Locate all the fine details of certifying agent accreditation in Subpart F- Accreditation of Certifying Agents of 7 CFR Section 205 or take a look at the General Accreditation Policies and Procedures.

How to Make Social Media Work at Work
How to Make Social Media Work at Work How to Make Social Media Work at Work How to Make Social Media Work at Work Rodd, PayScale.com Remember Friendster? I do, vaguely. It was one of the earliest social networking platforms that paved the way for MySpace (remember MySpace?) and eventually Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, Vine, SnapChat Its clear that social media is here to stay. It has become a valuable tool for people all over the world to connect in a variety of different fashions. Of course, the rise in social technology has had a tremendous impact on many businesses, and sparked an ongoing conversation about the pros and cons of transparency. From marketing to PR to policies regarding employee conduct, social media is a component worth addressing. As technology allows people to connect in exciting ways, the ability to reach new customers or potential employees is now easier than ever, providing your company is utilizing the proper tools. The Use of Social Media Policies As social media trends continue to develop, many companies are starting to adopt a formal social media policy for employees. According to PayScales 2014 Compensation Best Practices Report, more than half of respondents reported having a formal social media policy in place. Interestingly enough, many of these policies dont forbid the use of social media at work, but rather provide guidelines for appropriate usage. In fact, 37 percent of respondents to PayScales Compensation Best Practices Report said they encouraged employee social media use in 2013. This number will surely continue to increase. As companies begin to recognize social media as a valuable tool to reach potential customers or make business connections, employee social media usage can actually be extremely beneficial. Of course you dont want your employees to spend all day on Facebook and Twitter, but if youve built a solid company culture, social media can allow employees to become brand ambassadors for your company. Social Media Guidelines According to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) employees have the right to openly discuss work conditions on social media under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). This may sound scary if youre worried about employees posting negative opinions, but this shouldnt be too much of a concern if you have faith in your company culture. Your people are your assets, and when your people are excited about their jobs, they talk. Not only is this good for morale, but it can help you find potential hires who may have been unaware that your company is hiring. Encourage employees to use their networks to alert possible candidates about open positions and you might find it easier to fill highly-skilled positions. Social Media and Recruiting In addition to employee social media use, many organizations are beginning to rely more heavily on social media to recruit or evaluate potential employees. 61 percent of all respondents to the Compensation Best Practices report said they used social media as a recruiting tool. Many recruiters will set up unique social media profiles, or simply use their own to reach potential hires much faster. Not only does this speed up the recruiting process, it allows for a human component that can really make your organization stand out in the crowd. Quality over Quantity As a social media professional, Im often asked to explain the benefits of social media for businesses, or to deconstruct the mythical land that lies beyond the shares and retweets. Yes, the size of your audience is important, but not as important as the quality take this into consideration when you draft your social media policy. Encourage employees to share interesting news, company updates, and job postings. Your companys unique benefits or generous compensation package garners more appeal when its discussed organically, and this type of transparency can be very appealing.

US Military Active Duty Death Benefits & Entitlements
US Military Active Duty Death Benefits & Entitlements US Military Active Duty Death Benefits & Entitlements Family members of military personnel who die while serving on active duty, active duty for training (ADT), or initial duty training (IDT) may be eligible for several federal benefits, privileges or entitlements. When a family is notified of the death of an active duty military member, they are assigned to a Casualty Assistance Representative (CAR) whose sole job is to help the family through the process. If the CAR cannot answer your questions, they will refer you to the appropriate military official or government agency, or get the answer for you. The following shows the benefits, privileges, and entitlements for active duty military family survivors. Monetary Benefits Family members of military personnel who die as a direct or indirect result of wartime or peacetime service are eligible to receive several types of federal benefits. Benefits to a spouse and children are paid regardless of economic need, except in the case of a nonservice-connected death pension. Benefits for parents who might otherwise be eligible are not paid if the parents have income in excess of a certain amount each year. Your CAR, the nearest VA or Social Security office will explain the benefits to you, the amounts that can be paid, and help you complete the required claim forms. Death Gratuity The military death gratuity is a lump sum gratuitous payment made by the military to eligible beneficiaries of a member who dies on Active Duty (AD), Active Duty for Training (ADT), or Initial Duty Training (IDT), or full-time National Guard duty. Its purpose is to help the survivors in their readjustment and to aid them in meeting immediate expenses incurred. The death gratuity payment is $12,420 and is non-taxable. For those whose death is as a result of hostile actions and occurred in a designated combat operation or combat zone or while training for combat or performing hazardous duty, the payment is $100,000. The death gratuity payment is made to survivors of the deceased in this order: The memberâs lawful surviving spouse. Payment delivered by the CAR assigned to the reporting or assistance base, within 24 hours of the memberâs death, unless the surviving spouse desires other arrangements. If there is no spouse, to the child or children of the member, regardless of age or marital status, in equal shares (state laws guide payment to minor children). Payment for minor children is made by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) within 30 days after they have received the required claim form and supporting documentation. If none of the above, to the parents, or brothers and/or sisters, or any combination as designated by the deceased member. Payment delivered by the CAR assigned to the reporting or assistance base, within 24 hours of the memberâs death, unless the NOK desires other arrangements. The death gratuity is not paid to any other person when there are no survivors as listed above. A will is not a legal designation for death gratuity since such payment is not an allowance or a debt due to the member and cannot be part of the memberâs estate. The claim form required to apply for this benefit is DD Form 397, Claim Certification and Voucher for Death Gratuity Payment. Unpaid Pay and Allowances Upon the death of an active duty member, any pay and allowances due, but not paid to the member, are paid to the designated beneficiary named on the memberâs DD Form 93, Record of Emergency Data. Unpaid pay and allowances may include unpaid basic pay, payment for up to 60 days of accrued leave, amounts due for travel, per diem expenses, transportation of eligible family members, shipment of household goods, and unpaid installments of variable reenlistment bonuses. The decedentâs pay record is completely audited by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, and a check for any amount due is issued to the designated beneficiary. When there is no written designation by the member, any money due is paid to the first eligible recipient in the following order: The memberâs lawful surviving spouse. If there is no spouse, to the child or children of the member and descendants of deceased children, on their behalf. If none of the above, to the parents of the member in equal shares or the surviving parent. If none of the above, to the duly appointed legal representative of the memberâs estate. If none of the above, to the person(s) determined to be entitled under the laws of the state in which the member was domiciled. The claim form required to apply for this benefit is Standard Form 1174, Claim for Unpaid Compensation of Deceased Member of the Uniformed Services. Your CAR will help you complete the required claim form. Family Housing Eligible family members occupying government housing on the date the member dies may continue to occupy such housing without charge for a period of 365 days provided memberâs death was in the line-of-duty. If they vacate the government housing before the 180 days are up, the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), is paid for the remaining unused days. If the family members are not occupying government housing, they may receive BAH or an overseas housing allowance for 180 days after the memberâs death. Your CAR will explain this entitlement to you and help you complete the required claim form. Servicemembersâ Group Life Insurance (SGLI). The SGLI payment is $400,000 unless the member elected a lesser amount or declined coverage in writing. Monthly premium payments for the level of coverage selected by the member are automatically deducted from the memberâs pay. Determination and payment of proceeds are made by the Office of Servicemembersâ Group Life Insurance under the jurisdiction of the Department of VA. Payment of proceeds to a beneficiary is exempt from taxation. The insured member may have designated as principal or contingent beneficiary any person, firm, corporation or legal entity, including their estate, individually or as a trustee. If the member designated a trust, they indicated the name and date of the trust in the beneficiary block. If the member designated a trust through a Will, they annotated âLast Will and Testamentâ in the beneficiary block. If the member chose not to designate a specific beneficiary but preferred the proceeds be paid in the order of precedence, the member selected the âBy Lawâ designation. When the âBy Lawâ designation is used, the proceeds are automatically paid in the following order of precedence: The memberâs lawful surviving spouse. If there is no spouse, to the child or children of the member in equal shares, with the share of any deceased child to be distributed among the descendants of that child. If none of the above, to the parents of the member in equal shares or the surviving parent. If none of the above, to the duly appointed executor or administrator of the memberâs estate. If none of the above, to other next of kin. The claim form required to apply for this benefit is VA Form SGLV 8283, Claim for Death Benefits. Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) SBP is a monthly annuity paid by the military to the surviving spouse or, in some cases, eligible children, of a member who dies on active duty. The initial annuity paid to a surviving spouse is equal to 55 percent of the retired pay to which the member would have been entitled based upon years of active service if retired on the date of death (if the member was retirement-eligible). The annuity is reduced by the amount of the monthly DIC payment awarded and paid to the surviving spouse by the Department of VA. When the surviving spouse reaches age 62, the annuity is reduced to 35 percent. The annuity is paid until the spouse dies, but is suspended upon remarriage before age 55. The annuity to a surviving spouse may be reinstated if the subsequent marriage ends in death or divorce. The annuitant must send a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate to DFAS-DE to reinstate the annuity. If a second SBP benefit resulted from the remarriage, the surviving spouse must elect which of the two SBP benefits to receive. Should the surviving spouse remarry at age 55 or older, the annuitant will continue to receive the monthly annuity. The surviving spouse mustnotify DFAS-DE/FRB, 6760 E. Irvington Place, Denver CO 80279-6000, of any changes in marital status. Detailed information will be provided by your CAR and the DFAS-DE Center. Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan (RCSBP) It is a monthly annuity paid by the military to the surviving spouse or, in some cases, eligible children, of a Reserve Component member who dies and has completed the satisfactory years of service that qualified the member for retired pay at age 60. The member must have made an election within 90 days of notification of eligibility to participate in the program. Members of an Active Guard/Reserve 10211 (officer) or 12310 (enlisted) tour, are eligible to participate in the plan. Coverage is not automatic unless the member dies before the 90 day period established by law. The initial annuity paid to a surviving spouse is equal to 55 percent of the retired pay to which the member would have been entitled at age 60, reduced by the Reserve Portion Cost. SBP and RCSBP Factors Should the surviving spouse remarry before age 55, the annuity is paid in equal shares to eligible children under age 18, or under age 22 if a full-time student, unless handicapped. The coverage stops when there are no eligible children. A dependent child may be an adopted child, stepchild, grandchild, foster child, or recognized a natural child who lived with the member in a regular parent-child relationship. A child disabled before age 18, or before age 22 if a full-time student when the disability occurred, is an eligible beneficiary so long as the disability exists and the child remains incapable of self-support. DFAS-DE reinstates a childâs annuity when a child between the ages of 18 and 22 reenters school on a full-time basis, or a disabling condition recurs making the child incapable of self-support. Marriage at any age terminates a childâs eligibility. The monthly annuity for children is 55 percent and is not reduced by DIC or when a disabled child attains age 62. Marriage at any age terminates a childâs eligibility.? Survivor annuities are taxable income. You will receive a tax statement from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service at the end of the year. The statement will show the full amount of the annuity payments you received and the total amount of tax withheld during the year. Unless you elect otherwise, the amount of federal income tax withheld (FITW) will be as if you were a married individual claiming three exemptions. If you want your FITW changed at a later date, you must complete a new TD-Form W-4P, Withholding Certificate for Pension or Annuity Payments, showing the changes, and mail it to DFAS-DE/FRB, 6760 E. Irvington Place, Denver CO 80279-6000. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service withhold a 30 percent Federal income tax on annuities paid to nonresident aliens unless the beneficiary resides in a country that has a tax treaty with the United States specifying a different withholding rate. Address questions to the Internal Revenue Service, Assistant Commissioner (International), ATTN: IN:C:TPS, 950 LâEnfant Plaza South, SW, Washington DC 20024-2123, or contact the nearest American Embassy. Annuities may be subject to Federal estate taxes. Beneficiaries should address tax questions to a legal assistance officer or the nearest Internal Revenue Service office. A certificate of continued eligibility form will be sent to you each year prior to your birthday. Complete and return the form promptly so the Defense Finance and Accounting Service can continue your annuity without interruption. Read the instructions on the form and make sure you have completed it correctly. Sign and date the form and send it to DFAS-DE/FRB, 6760 E. Irvington Place, Denver CO 80279-6000. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) Offset The Defense Finance and Accounting Service reduces a surviving spouseâs annuity by the amount of DIC the VA awards and pays the surviving spouse. The SBP annuity is not reduced by the amount of a childâs DIC entitlement. The claim forms required to apply for this benefit are DD Form 2656-4 (this form is not available electronically), TD-Form W-4P, Withholding Certificate for Pension or Annuity Payments, (available from the Post Office or IRS), and SF 1199A, Direct Deposit Sign-Up Form. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service may require additional documents to establish an annuity (i.e., Representative Payee documentation; school certification; physicianâs statement for a disabled child over age 18). Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) The DIC payments may be authorized for surviving spouses who have not remarried, unmarried children under age 18, disabled children, children between the age of 18 and 23 if attending a VA-approved school, and low-income parents of servicemembers who die from: A disease or injury incurred or aggravated while on active duty or active duty for training. An injury incurred or aggravated in line of duty while on inactive duty training.A disability compensable by the Veteransâ Affairs. DIC paid to a surviving spouse is not based on the memberâs military pay grade. The amount paid for a spouse with one or more children of the deceased is increased for each child. The amount of the DIC payment for parents vary according to the number of parents, the amount of their individual or combined total annual income, and whether they live together or if remarried, living with a spouse. The surviving spouse and parents who receive DIC may be granted a special allowance for aid and attendance if a patient is in a nursing home, disabled, or blind and needs or requires the regular aid and attendance of another person. If they are not so disabled as to require the regular aid and attendance of another person but who, due to disability, are permanently housebound, they may be granted additional special allowances. DIC payments to a surviving spouse are payable for life, as long as the spouse does not remarry. Should the surviving spouse remarry, payments are terminated for life? Your CAR or the nearest VA office will explain the benefit to you, the amounts that can be paid, and help you complete the required claim forms. The claim form when applying for this benefit is VA Form 21-534, Application for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation or Death Pension Accrued Benefits by Surviving Spouse or Child, or VA Form 21-535, Application for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation by Parent(s). Denial of Claim for DIC If the VA denies your claim for DIC benefits, you may file an appeal with the Board of Veteransâ Appeals. The appeal must be filed within one year from the date of the notification of a VA decision to file an appeal. The first step in the appeal process is for you to file a written notice of disagreement with the VA regional office that made the decision. It is a written statement that you disagree with the VAâs decision. Following receipt of the written notice, the VA will furnish you a âStatement of the Caseâ describing what facts, laws, and regulations were used in deciding the case. To complete the request for appeal, you must file a âSubstantive Appealâ within 60 days of the mailing of the Statement of Case, or within one year from the date, the VA mailed its decision, whichever period ends later. Your CAR or the nearest VA office will help you file a written notice of disagreement with the VARO (Veteran Affairs Regional Office) that made the decision. Nonservice-Connected Death Pension If the VARO determines that you are not eligible for DIC, you may be eligible to apply for a nonservice-connected death pension. Surviving spouses and unmarried children under age 18, age 23 if attending a VA-approved school, of deceased members with wartime service may be eligible for this pension if they meet income limitations prescribed by law. Qualifying children who become incapable of self-support because of a disability before age 18 may be eligible for a pension as long as the condition exists unless the child marries or the childâs income exceeds the income limit. The rate of the pension depends on the amount of income the surviving spouse or child receives from other sources. A pension is not payable to those whose estates are so large that it is reasonable to assume the estate will maintain them financially. Eligible survivors should make application through the local VA office. The VA will determine your eligibility. Montgomery GI Bill Death Benefit The VA will pay a special Montgomery GI Bill death benefit to a designated survivor in the event of the service-connected death of an individual while on active duty. The deceased must either have been entitled to educational assistance under the Montgomery GI Bill program, or a participant in the program who would have been so entitled but for the high school diploma or length of service requirement. The amount paid will be equal to the deceased memberâs actual military pay reduction less any educational benefits paid. If you are eligible to receive the death benefit, submit a letter, along with proof of relationship and a copy of the DD Form 1300, Report of Casualty, to the appropriate VA Regional Office. The death benefit is made in âby-lawâ fashion to the spouse, children, and parents, and will not be paid to anyone else in the âby-lawâ chain. Your CAR or the nearest VA office can help you apply for a refund of contributions. Social Security Payments Social Security monthly benefits are paid to a spouse or a divorced spouse, age 60 or over; a spouse or divorced spouse regardless of age with children of the decedent under age 16 or disabled in their care and meeting social security requirements. A divorced spouse must have been married to the service member at least 10 years. Monthly payments are also paid to children until age 18 or 19 if a full-time student at a primary or secondary school, or age 18 or older and disabled before age 18. Spouses waiting until age 65 to apply for Social Security receive maximum benefits. However, they can receive reduced Social Security payments between ages 60 and 65. Dependent parents are eligible for benefits at age 62 if they were more than 50 percent dependent on the deceased service member for their support. The amount paid can only be determined by the Social Security Administration, which has a record of the wages earned by the member during the period of both military and civilian employment under the Social Security Program. To receive this benefit, eligible survivors should make application to the nearest Social Security office. They will explain the benefit, determine your eligibility, the amounts that can be paid, and help you complete the required claim forms. You should apply early, as the law generally permits retroactive payments of 12 months. Social Security Lump Sum Death Payment The Social Security Administration pays a lump-sum death payment, up to $255, to the surviving spouse living with the member at the time of death. Separation because of military service, is considered living together. If there is no surviving spouse, it is paid to the oldest child who was eligible for or entitled to Social Security benefits for the month of death, based upon the deceased memberâs earnings. No other survivors are entitled to this benefit. This benefit is paid regardless if burial, funeral, or memorial benefits were paid by the military. To receive this benefit, eligible survivors must make application to the nearest Social Security office. They will explain the benefit, determine your eligibility, the amount that can be paid, and help you complete the required claim forms.

What to Do When A Diverse Culture is Causing Challenges What to Do When A Diverse Culture is Causing Challenges Recruiting managers understand the benefits that come with building a diverse company culture. Racial, cultural, age and gender diversity in the workplace have been proven to drive innovation, attract talented team members and even improve overall business performance. However, going from zero to 100 on any initiative can cause friction within an organization, and focusing on workplace diversity as a new hiring priority is no exception. Instead of making a quick change and hoping it works out, we recommend hiring managers gradually support a more diverse culture to avoid the possible pitfalls that come with making a sudden shift. Work with training departments to anticipate and understand how to work with and leverage cultural differences, then proactively address the following challenges that often come with diverse cultures. Avoid making offensive assumptions While hiring managers should be aware of cultural styles (such as those presented in the Lewis Model of Cultural Types), you shouldnt assume that individuals you hire will exhibit those characteristics. Employees need a chance to demonstrate who they are as individuals without having to carry the burden of assumption. Address barriers to communication Understand that when a diverse group of people first come together, different communication styles and expectations can often give the appearance of a clash or make team members slower to speak up. Donât be discouraged by initial setbacks; instead, train your managers and employees to allow for cultural differences and encourage them to carefully consider how they are communicating. Since communication styles vary within cultures by personality, too, this new challenge will help your team learn to communicate across a wide variety of styles. Plan for resistance to change Despite the multicultural world we live in and the data that supports the benefits of diverse workplaces, your company may encounter individual employees who do not embrace the changes within the workplace. Itâs your responsibility to provide information and training that educates your employees; it is not your responsibility to tolerate racism or discrimination within your workplace. When you encounter particularly resistant employees, clearly outline your expectations for behavior and communication that align with your workplace policies. Consider different strategies for managing diverse types of people. Diversity training will help your employees adjust to working within a more diverse environment, but managers will need support, too. Consider in advance how you will support your management team in communicating, setting expectations and managing a diverse group of people. Managers can get a head start in managing diversity by evaluating their current style and considering how they might adapt to better communicate with a diverse team. Overall, increasing your companyâs diversity is a worthwhile goal because it helps you broaden and represent your customer base and bring different and potentially innovative thoughts into the company. As a result of adopting this updated attitude towards diversity, companies will encourage a more inclusive and open working environment that reduces turnover and increases access to company-wide innovation.

What Did You Learn from Your First Job
What Did You Learn from Your First Job What Did You Learn from Your First Job? What Did You Learn from Your First Job Many of us are inclined to remember a lot of firsts in life: first kiss, first beer, first date, first car. And, of course, first job, especially the first job after graduating from college. In most cases, that first job will not make you rich in the wallet, but could make you richer in wisdom. That's what happened to me: I became better schooled about the ways of business, how to play office politics, and how to work nicely with others. In contrast, I had a crappy salary, little spending cash, and had to get my parents to cosign a loan for a new car. Those memories as painful as they remain came back when I read a post this week on the Career Rocketeer blog. The writer, Mario Schulzke, reinforced the point that learning is more important than earning at that first post-college job. His advice: Let the job help determine your future, Develop skills related to what you're passionate about, and, Build professional relationships that can help you advance your career.

These inspirational notes helped celebrities psych themselves up to succeed
These inspirational notes helped celebrities psych themselves up to succeed These inspirational notes helped celebrities psych themselves up to succeed Sometimes, you need to see it to believe it. This is a helpful visualizing exercise that everyone, even celebrities, have done to make their success a reality.Octavia Butler: âSo be it! I will find the way to do this. See to it!âOctavia Butler is remembered as one of the greatest science-fiction writers of the 20th century, becoming the first science fiction writer to win a MacArthur âgeniusâ grant. But in 1988, before the awards and recognition, she wrote an inspirational note to herself in her private journal. In her entry, she described her future success: âThis is my lifeâ¦.I will help poor black youngsters go to college. I will get the best of health care for my mother and myself. I will hire a car whenever I want or need to. I will travel whenever and wherever in the world that I choose. My books will be read by millions of people! So be it! See to it!âShe visualized her future success with no compromises or qualifications. Failure was not an option. Verbs were in the present tense. âSo be it! See to it!â Butler promised herself she would become a best-selling author, and she did become one.As life coach and vision-board proponent Martha Beck notes, visualizing works because it asks us to shift our mindâs attention towards our goals, so that they begin to feel more like reality. âWhen you put your attention on something, you experience more of it. Maybe it is created by a magical force of attention. At the very least, you are going to selectively pay attention to these things you like once you selectively start to gear yourself to focus on them more,â Beck said.Kendrick Lamarâs rules for successToday, Kendrick Lamar is recognized as one of the greatest rappers of his generation. In 2011, he was still an up-and-coming rapper recording tracks in his garage. In this garage, photographer David Black noticed that Lamar had an inspirational board of advice to himself and took a photo of it, which was published in California Sunday. In his inspirational note to himself, Lamar identified five keys to hip-hop success: charisma, substance, lyrics, uniqueness, and a strong work ethic. âThe top 5 didnât get there off mere talent. You match talent with drive,â he wrote under the Work Ethics column. âTake away 50âs ability to make great songs and you still have one of the hardest-working human beings Iâve ever encountered.âVisualizing how he was going to remain disciplined and centered like his idols worked. With his inspiration board guiding him, Lamar earned four Grammy award nominations for the good kid, m.A.A.d city album that he incubated in this garage.Jim Carrey wrote himself a check for $10 millionWhen you donât have it in your hands, you can still get power out of holding a physical reminder. Thatâs what comedian and actor Jim Carrey did.In 1997, he told Oprah Winfrey in an interview that he would drive his Toyota to Hollywood Hills and imagine a world where he wasnât broke, but a succe ssful actor directors would love to work with.He took this visualization one step further and wrote himself a future check for âacting services rendered.â The check gave him a deadline of a few years.âI put it in my wallet and I kept it there and it deteriorated and deteriorated,â Carrey said. âBut then just before Thanksgiving 1995, I found out I was going to make $10 million off of âDumb and Dumber.âOf course, you canât just rest on visualization alone. Hard work, discipline and talent are the foundation to making this exercise work. But what these notes show is that learning how to inspire yourself is just as necessary too.
